Can my rabbit eat alfalfa hay?

With so many options available, it can be difficult knowing what rabbits can and can’t eat.  One question that often comes up is: should rabbits eat alfalfa?

Pets over a year of age should only be fed alfalfa as an occasional treat; it's much too nutrient-rich. Think eating a diet of candy (sounds good to me!). You can start transitioning them now, but you may experience some problems weening pets off of the more desirable alfalfa. It helps to mix the alfalfa with 2nd cutting timothy, gradually getting them used to the new food. If you still have a problem with feeding/eating, we suggest our 3rd cut timothy. We also recommend you put them on our timothy hay-based pellet.

Ultimately, we recommend you ask your exotic vet when in doubt, as they know your pet best. That being said, we do have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, so if your pet does not like what you ordered, we're happy to send you a replacement of the same kind or different (must be equivalent value) or give you a store credit.
